Anaesthesia
The Anesthesia Service is a vital allied health unit responsible for delivering safe and effective anesthetic care before, during, and after surgical procedures. Its core responsibilities include pre-anesthesia evaluation, intraoperative anesthesia management, post-anesthetic care, and pain control. The service is committed to ensuring patient safety and comfort by preventing pain and distress associated with surgical interventions. Anesthesia methods provided include general anesthesia (inducing a temporary loss of consciousness), sedation (administering intravenous medication to relax or reduce awareness), and regional anesthesia (injecting local anesthetics near nerves to numb specific parts of the body, such as spinal, epidural, or nerve blocks). Anesthesia personnel carefully assess each patient’s age, medical history, and condition to determine the most appropriate anesthetic approach. Thorough evaluation of a patient’s medical history is conducted to identify potential allergies or contraindications, allowing early recognition and prevention of adverse reactions. Throughout the perioperative period, anesthetists monitor vital signs and physiological responses closely, identifying any irregularities and responding promptly to ensure patient stability. Though adverse reactions to anesthesia are rare, the service is prepared to manage complications swiftly and effectively. The team works in close collaboration with surgeons and other clinical staff, while also engaging patients and when appropriate, their families in clear and empathetic communication regarding potential anesthetic risks. This comprehensive approach helps ensure informed consent, enhances patient trust, and supports safe surgical outcomes.
